Probably no igate :(
I remembered that I don't have any more pages in my passport and making an appointment to get new ones while I'm in the US looks like a pain and then getting the visa itself looks like a pain and it'd be a lot of pressure to buy the ticket and then be screwed if I can't get new pages and a visa in time :( :((( |

yawn, another food blog
over at chefmonkey.blogspot.com. all my kitchen blogging will move here from now on, so if you enjoy the recipes, please subscribe or visit from time to time. i've had my livejournal for over seven years, and while i like the social networking aspect, the functionality, look and user interface leave a lot to be desired. after four days of use, i'm much enjoying the clean simplicity of blogger and plan to post there every or nearly every day. the content won't be exclusively food-related, though much of it will document cooking and restaurant dining. i'll probably also write about things like books, news and travel, but scrabble content will remain over here.

Eat your hartre out, Sartre! Got your Godot right here, Beckett!
From this interesting page: http://www.alternativereel.com/includes/top-ten/display_review.php?id=00096("Top 10 Offbeat Quotes About Hell") ...comes a snippet by one of the acutest commentators on the human condition that has ever existed in American literature: "A God who could make good children as easily as bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave his angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice, and invented hell—mouths mercy, and invented hell—mouths Golden Rules and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people, and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites his poor abused slave to worship him!" —Mark Twain, The Mysterious Stranger, 1916 |

bedtime reading
I have frequently read Harold and the Purple Crayon to my son as a bedtime story, the same slightly worn around the edges small paperback copy that I had as a child. Tonight for the first time he read it to me. At the moment when Harold falls off the mountain (because he hasn't drawn the other side) and before he begins to draw the hot air balloon to stop his fall, my son made the incisive observation, "if he didn't still have the crayon, he would be falling forever." |

THE HYALOIDS
I'll add one to the hackneyed humour column by cleverly changing holidays to its acceptable anagram. I've done what I most wanted to do during the holidays -- relax, and I already feel much better. Work has been fun, but very tiring and intense for several months. My sister is in town and we've been showing her the city. My gf came over for xmas eve (we celebrate Christmas at midnight in Hispanic families, usually) and since my parents are around we had a nice small family gathering with tasty foods and presents. We also walked around the beach cities (Hermosa and Manhattan) on the night of the 24th and it was beautiful -- everything was deserted since presumably people are sleeping and waiting for Santa. We also played a game of Puerto Rico when one small mistake by Maria at the end allowed me to win by just two points, despite both of them having the deadly harbor-wharf combination! (Puerto Rico is a freaking awesome game, I'm going to try to program an AI for it if I ever get the time). I also treated myself to a bunch of stuff for my acoustic guitar. I changed the strings, bought a new capo, stand, and combination wire clipper / winder tool, and now my guitar sounds awesome again. I'm trying to teach myself to sing properly. I'm seriously going to try to make a cover band for next year with some friends and hopefully get to play in bars/etc around the area. I've wrapped up first place for the club if I don't go on the 30th. But I will do my best to go anyway, because it seems cheap to win like that and I like playing Scrabble. Barring any last minute trip plans or anything. I got tickets to the Vancouver tournament, so I'm going to that one; other planned tournaments are the one-day Stanton, maybe Reno, and random tourneys here and there. I still can't make myself study words, but I think I will deal with that eventually. At the very least, I'm actively trying to reduce my equity loss NOT due to word knowledge to close to 0, and I've been having some pretty good games recently. Oh, and I'm going to forgo buying a cool new Macbook and instead get a bike to ride along the beach and get in shape :) |

Christmas Dinner in Irvine
contributions of Chef Jackass: • Leg of Lamb roasted to medium rare, garlic infused and herb encrusted after being rubbed with homemade curry powder • Lobster tails with clarified butter sauce contributions of sophonax: • dill-cottage cheese bread • chewy chocolate cookies serve all that up with a couple of dark Dogfish ales. yes, we rule. and so did the Christmas weather – it was 67° and we spent most of our Christmas day wandering on the beach and the jetty at Corona del Mar. life is good. Cooking - and Spouse Helped!/Albany?
Last night I made dinner, greatly overestimating the servings needed. I thought there'd be nine and a third guests (including two-year-old Sammy), when, in fact, only Spouse and his parents were home. As Spouse noted in his blog, Aunt Mary decided not to come in protest (and to punish us heathens) because of what we'd done with her nativity figurines, posing them in X-rated acts. As much as I wish there were a God and heaven, I don't believe in either, and our proud atheism often causes trouble with his devout mom and aunt. But, back to dinner. . . So, I made coq au vin using fourteen pounds (!!) of chicken. The prep work took at least three hours longer than usual, even with my sous chef's help, as each chicken has to be cut into pieces, trimmed, partly skinned (to reduce the fat content of this already-fatty dish), seasoned, floured and browned in rendered bacon fat, and then the frying has to be done in small batches. Spouse is scarily inept when it comes to using large sharp knives, even after I demonstrated proper technique, but he gets an A- for effort! I was equally inept with the flambe - and nearly burned the kitchen down - when I added two cups of brandy and lit it over a too-high flame. Honestly, I came this close to scorching my face off when the flames shot up about three feet from the pot. I immediately covered the pot with the heavy glass lid, and Spouse said, "Well, now, you've completely extinguished the flame; don't think you wanted to do that." "Really?" I said. "Well, sure, you've just cut off all the oxygen." "Oh." Turns out Spouse was 100% wrong (or the lid not tight-fitting enough). When I took the lid off a minute or so later, the flames shot up again. And once again, I just missed getting scorched. Scary!! I then added two whole bottles of pinot noir, tons of fresh herbs and an entire bulb of fresh garlic. Two changes I made to accommodate the onion-loathing, vegephobic Raus was to omit the onions and mushrooms completely. As a result - and to my disappointment - this made the dish unrecognizable as coq au vin. Ah well. . .Still tasty, but not as good. I am still deciding whether to go to Albany. OP has offered to drive me there if I make it up to his place - and this would make for a fun trip, but that's still a lot of time in the car. I'm not concerned about OP's driving skills, but my driving, though much-improved, still makes me nervous. Since that really bad accident coming back from the Maine tourney (wherein I totaled my fairly new Hyundai, and broke my finger), I haven't taken any trip longer than an hour by myself. Albany would mean at least six hours' driving roundtrip, just to get to OP's place. Feel like I'd be rolling the dice no matter how careful I was. I know this may be shocking to some, but I Am a Bad Driver. BUT 2010 seems like a milestone new year, and it would be fun to hoot an' holler with everyone. . .so, maybe. Current Mood: insomniac |

My best play from Causeway
Despite a mediocre Causeway tournament, I still managed to play some exciting games and make some great plays. This was my favorite. Quackle chokes on it: ask Championship player during the game and it doesn't even come up, but in the full game report it's listed as the best play, winning 100% of the time, which is wrong also. Sadly, there is, to use chess lingo, a "cook." One of the reasons I thought my play was better than similar plays turns out not to matter, although the winning play on the next turn is a damn tough find, and far worse spread-wise anyway, so my play is still best. For OWL-land readers, you need to know only 2 # words to fully analyze the position. I've listed them after the cut so Collins players can try their hand at it without any help. Finally, Naween (probably) did not miss a bingo when he played BARD--Quackle decided to fill out the rest of his rack for him as it's wont to do on occasion. Edited to actually have the link: http://cross-tables.com/annotated.php?u=5257#22( Read more... ) |

Pope knocked down by woman at Christmas Eve Mass
I realize the following bemusement will be offensive to some readers, but those folks should know they're gonna see something like this from me every once in a while as soon as they put me on their "friends" list, and should also know their offense is not going to concern me. I didn't purposely choose to spoil anyone's birthday commemoration, it's just a coincidence that the event provoking comment happened the same day. (Seems like LJ should also allow creation of an "adversaries" list that you have as much interest in monitoring as your friends.) So anyway, let me get this straight: the woman who knocks the Pope down is automatically labeled as deranged, (according to quotes in news articles from sources close to the incident), for her action, but... ... the guy she knocks down is a former member of the Nazi party, (note coincidental anagram of manger to German), and currently leads what, about a third or more? of the world's population in believing that a human being many of us can agree was probably likable, and wiser than average for his time, also happened to be the progeny of an all-powerful, extra-human, sentient, but probably not animal, entity which has never been and cannot be proven to exist; and by virtue of his alleged genealogy, said human was also endowed with some supernatural abilities or characteristics himself; and that as a result of that human's life, we need to recite Latin verses and burn incense and candles in remembrance, at least partly because the unprovable entity would be upset or disrespected if we don't; and no one, (well, no one but me and a few other non-followers), would have the nerve to automatically label the Pope (not to mention his whole organization) deranged as well? Well, FWIW, Happy Birthday dead guy, and Sam Rosin. I'm not allowing any comments on this post, I don't need to be agreed with any more than I need people to try to start arguments, and what most of you would have to say about it would not be news to me any more than this post should be news to you. |

Part 1 of My Scrabble Year (in pictures & short blurbs) Cannon Beach, OR January 1st - 3rd, 2009 On the left is a shot of nigelbo, shirrach, wallydraigle, myself, wantonhalo and bbstenniz walking toward Haystack Rock, a landmark of Cannon Beach. Technically this event started in the last several days of 2008, but for argument's sake it started on January 1st. For New Year's, all of us were staying in a cabin that nigelbo's stepdad owns. Our skilled photog j_is_worth8 came out to visit us for a few days. She even got a video of me carrying wantonhalo out to the frigid Pacific Ocean and dropping him in! Judy makes amazing food too, and we were certainly thankful to her for lending us her culinary skills while she was visiting. We went over our intended Scrabble quota, despite our intention for this trip to be almost Scrabble free, playing regular Scrabble, team Scrabble, phoniez and anagrams throughout the week. We did manage at least one day where no form of Scrabble was played. Highlights of the trip included a day trip down to the Tillamook Cheese factory in Tillamook, Oregon (we had 6 people crammed into a vehicle and almost ran out of gas on the way!), team Pictionary and the discovery of an abundance of NANG by the ocean shore. Question #1
Just what is it that we discovered when we discovered NANG? (hint: after she visited the Galapagos, srockhop told us that there was "white NANG everywhere.") Vancouver, British ColumbiaMarch 7th - 8th, 2009The Vancouver tournament is one of my favourites of the year, since it falls on the weekend after my birthday. A vast array of Scrabblers came from afar, including Michael Perl (all the way from Upstate New York, he is the other half of the awesomeness that is the picture on the left), bbstenniz, sophonax and xpmorgan. On the Friday before the tournament, locals frayed_yak & nagekinoki took us all to Granville Island to get some of the best foodz in the Greater Vancouver area. Perl experienced the wonder of the Nanaimo Bar for the first time in his life, and Conrad drank some of Granville Island's best brew legally (he's of age up here in BC). Saturday night we went to Banana Leaf, a local Malaysian restaurant, to celebrate my birthday (the 3rd) and Dion Saldanha's birthday (the 5th). Nadja Rence, marqueous, cesarsalad, dillyroo, spherulitic and srockhop joined in on the fun as well. It's a yearly tradition now! Question #2What different objects was Michael Perl constantly laughing at and taking pictures of while we drove around Richmond? (hint: they were just about always perceived as double entendres) |
